Transatlantic Triumph and Heroic Failure: The Story of the Galway Line Tim Collins

An account of heroic failure that has all the ingredients of a great story - transatlantic travel, record-breaking crossings, disasters, emigration, the American Civil War and great expectations dashed. The Atlantic Steam Navigation Company, 'The Galway Line', was launched in June 1858 with high hopes. Today there is no evidence in Galway docks that it was once the 'Liverpool' of Ireland.

Transatlantic Triumph and Heroic Failure Avis

On Saturday night last the Circassian sailed from Galway. She had on board 342 passengers, of whom 108 were first class. 170 persons who applied for a passage could not obtain room. The Irish Times, Sept. 21, 1859.
