The Enlightenment Résumé

The Enlightenment: A Comparative Social History, 1721-1794 Thomas Munck

What did the Enlightenment mean for people who were not intellectuals or members of a wealthy elite? In this incisive new book, Thomas Munck shows the profound impact of Enlightenment ideas on a broad range of social groups. Moving beyond traditional treatments, which tend to focus on leading individuals and salon culture, Munck demonstrates that the Enlightenment can be fruitfully studied from the vantage point of ordinary people. He focuses on Paris, London, and Hamburg, but draws comparisons across much of Europe. The book begins with Montesquieu's Persian Letters in 1721 and ends with the changing direction of the French Revolution in 1794, and with a reassessment of enlightened absolutism in the light of changing relationships between state and citizen. It will be an invaluable text for courses on the Enlightenment and provides a valuable new perspective for anyone studying eighteenth-century Europe or the history of ideas.

The Enlightenment Avis

'The analysis is lucid and engaging at all times, and is pitched with great skill at a level that will reach out to new students and readers while still synthesising and reacting to a huge volume of new scholarship for the benefits of specialists...it is difficult to see how it could be done better.' English Historical Review 'On a subject which can receive abstruse treatment, and where scholars tend to dwell on ideas and their impact on a restricted circle, Munck writes in a clear and accessible yet balanced and authoritative way which will make this excellent introductory reading for undergraduates.' Continuity and Change 'Thomas Munck's book will come as a boon to all seeking an up-to-date synthesis of research on the infrastructure of the Enlightenment.' Urban History 'This is a very careful, meticulous work based on extraordinary effort; it is also a very adventurous work that seeks to redefine and characterize the Enlightenment. It goes where few works have attempted, and it should be taken very seriously.' Journal of Social History
