Gringo Soup Résumé

Gringo Soup John Aspinall

As Lisa, tour leader with Wanderlust Holidays, anticipates supervising the new arrivals on a trip round Mexico, she is feeling less than delighted at the prospect. Her passengers aren't exactly ecstatic either, and not only with the performance of their 'rep'. As we discover in the course of witnessing each day from a different perspective, those on the trip are less than happy both with their travelling companions and, in most cases, with the cards life has dealt them. In this utterly original debut, set against the vibrant backdrop of Mexico, John Aspinall explores with remarkable insight the complexity and pathos of human interaction. In doing so he poignantly reminds us that our perceptions of others are an unreliable guide to the frailties and idiosyncracies concealed by their behaviour.

Gringo Soup Avis

'An absolute joy ... the characters are acutely drawn and never descend into cliche with even the anal, nerdy Brian pitched so that you're laughing with him rather than at him. Essentially Gringo Soup is a ccomedy of human manners but it still packs a powerful observational punch ... Excellent stuff.' -- Dublin Evening Herald 'Immensely vivacious ... very, very funny indeed' -- Open Book, BBC Radio 4 'Entertaining, informative and occasionally laugh-out-loud funny, this is an ambitious, well-written novel' -- Marie Claire 'A darkly funny look at package holiday hell that makes for perfect summer reading' -- Mirror 'An absolute joy ... [it] packs a powerful observational punch' -- Dublin Evening Herald 'Darkly comic ... a brisk, entertaining tale' -- Hepzibah Anderson, Daily Mail 'Highly amusing ... With egos racing out of control, relationships reach breaking point against the backdrop of Yucatan rainforests. Safe to say you'll never want to go on a package tour again. A lively debut.' -- Neil Anderson, Big Issue In The North 'An intriguing and darkly funny read that will definitely appeal to the nosey!' -- The Sticks 20020425
