Nursing Development Units (NDUs) have existed in that name in the UK since the early 1980s. Many other nursing settings - wards, clinics, community teams - share their philosophy and aims, although they may not use this title. Publicity in the nursing press, at conferences and in the national media often demonstrates the interest, enthusiasm and occasional controversy generated by NDUs. This text offers an update on recent developments, discussing some myths and reflecting on current issues affecting NDUs. It explores the challenges facing NDUs and answers many of the recurring questions they raise.
