In The Great Rebellion Ivan Roots reconsiders in detail the course of the Civil War, and more particularly, of the Commonwealth and Protectorate that succeeded it. Going back to contemporary source material, but taking critical account of recent research, he has traced anew not only the events of those years, but the motives which shaped men's actions. The narrative is closely chronological and a bibliography concentrates on the work of the last two or three decades.
