The haunting lyrics of Gene Pitney's classic hit '24 Hours From Tulsa' will strike a chord with anyone who has ever claimed to know anything about music. 'Long distance information give me Memphis, Tennessee' will similarly bring on an attack of nostalgia to millions worldwide - and not just to Chuck Berry fans. Amarillo, Nutbush, Tucson - put them together with Phoenix, Tulsa, El Paso and what have you got? Yes, they all feature in famous songs. You've heard the songs but what do you know about the places, the people, the lyrics and the performers?Find out in this absorbing adventure tracing the roots of all those celebrated US name-place songs. Are the Eagles still standing on a corner in Winslow, Arizona? Why would you want to catch the last train to Clarksville? Or take the choo-choo to Chattanooga? Will the sea winds still be blowing in Galveston? And is the Wichita lineman still on the line? For the answers to all of these questions and many more, join author George Miller in a compelling and entertaining journey across America in his mission to unearth the mysteries of US musical folklore as he encounters Voodoo in New Orleans, discovers the real Jojo's bar from the Beatles' classic Get Back, and finally reaches Amarillo; the place that, famously, Tony Christie and Peter Kay could not find!

The mixture of music, travel and entertainment is a real winner - Ron Harman, Nashville Country Music Hall of Fame. Now, at last, I'll be able to find my way there! - Tony Christie. Fantastic idea, brilliantly written - Paul Paxton, BBC Look North. a refreshingly fun read for music lovers as well as travellers - Kathica.com. This book is wonderfully written - you would think you were there, savouring the excitement and atmosphere - Charles White (Doctor Rock, BBC Radio York). I loved A"This Is the Way To AmarilloA". What an inspired idea for a book! George has written a most entertaining and enlightening travel and musical journal about places featured in famous songs which we've all taken for granted. This compelling and unforgettable musical odyssey is essential reading for everyone who enjoys hearing popular music and also discovering the inspiration behind so many legendary recordings - David "Kid" Jensen. Readers will find it impossible to read this entertainingly informative travel book without starting to whistle, hum or sing snatches of many old favourites - To unearth facts about the places, people and lyrics of classics from The Eagles, Tina Turner, Muddy Waters, Ray Charles and Fats Domino, the Hexam-based author's musical odyssey took him on a 5,225-mile journey across 11 states which can lay claim to being the hotbed of American musical history - The Northumbrian. This is the Way to Amarillo is a fascinating glimpse into the world of an ordinary man on an extraordinary adventure. Unlike most travel writers, who invariably see themselves as professional travellers, Miller comes across just like you or I. He is a stranger in a strange land, noticeably intimidated by his surroundings at times, overawed by them at others pleased to find a friendly face along the way, and even more thrilled when he comes across two 21 year olds discovering Newcastle Brown Ale on their first night out drinking. While music strings the whole journey together, Miller is equally as intrigued by the local history of the town he visits and there are scores of facts and titbits of information Miller gleaned over the course of his travels. Equally successful is the way the text is peppered through with song lyrics - The effect on the reader is like a quietly playing soundtrack as a background to your reading, occasionally surfacing to interrupt the story but generally lilting alongside it, bringing back to memory classic songs from the last half century. - Living North.
