Torn Ear is the only cub to survive when the gamekeeper digs up the earth. Taught how to hunt and how to recognise danger, Torn Ear copes with injury, hunger, predators and the hunt before he meets Velvet and has his own cubs. But then his favourite cub is captured and Torn Ear must venture deep into man's territory to rescue her. He succeeds and for once the gamekeeper is foiled.
