Sir Walter Scott Résumé

Sir Walter Scott: A Life in Story Eileen Dunlop

Walter Scott was obsessed with the traditional tales of Border lands and the exploits of his ancestry, as he loved and lived through stories - they were vital to his sense of place and sense of self. His novels and poems reveal his view of history and the influences that made him. There was also the story he told of himself and his life story, written after his death by his son-in-law, and the reminiscences of those who knew him. All contribute to his legend. Eileen Dunlop looks at the truth behind the legend to find Scott the man as well as Scott the writer.

Sir Walter Scott Avis

' ... The Scotland of his childhood is vividly realised and the Edinburgh of his youth, with its close-knit community of lawyers, politicians, university lecturers and aristocracy is convincingly brought to life. ... for those who want to find out more about Scott, the society which he inhabited and the impulses that drove him to write and to keep writing in the face of adversity, it is to be commended.'

-- Alison Lumsden, University of Aberdeen * Scottish Literary Review 9/2 *

' ... Her style is unassuming but undeniably informed, and sitting down with her book is a welcome alternative to the ideologically driven and footnote-burdened encounters one has come to expect and perhaps too willingly accommodate in academic writing. ... her conversational style draws us in and carries us along in a manner that Scott himself would have appreciated. The eight pages of colour illustrations are welcome. ... '

-- Stephen Brown, Trent University * Eighteenth-Century Studies No 32 *
