This analysis of Christchurch Priory reveals the development of a single historic ecclesiastical building over nine centuries (1094-1994). It includes a critical assessment of the changes and adaptations carried out between the early Norman innovations. These include Saxo-Norman crypt, Norman nave, transitions between Romanesque and early English Gothic, to Decorated, and Perpendicular Gothic and Renaissance. By studying the process of adaptation and the changing requirements of the building, the author gives a historical picture of this one building.
