Therapist's Guide to Clinical Intervention Summary

Therapist's Guide to Clinical Intervention: The 1-2-3s of Treatment Planning by Sharon L. Johnson

Designed as a reference for clinicians completing insurance forms, participating in managed care or practicing in treatment settings requiring formalized goals and treatment objectives, this guide provides basic information on mental disorders. Treatment goals, objectives and techniques are presented in outline form for each specific illness. Separate chapters discuss skill building exercises across a range of disorders, such as assertiveness training. The book is divided into five sections. Section one lists major psychological illnesses. Each disorder heading includes a brief paragraph discussing diagnostic criteria and general treatment goals, followed by specific treatment techniques to fulfill these goals. Part two discusses how to anticipate and treat special circumstances across disorders, such as suicidal tendencies, dangerousness and treating the disabled. Section three identifies skills for treating a variety of different disorders, including stress management, relaxation exercises, problem-solving and assertiveness training. Part four provides samples of clinical forms while the final section makes up a glossary of psychological and psychiatric terminology.
