With Clothed in Language Pauline Matarasso has written a modern Wisdom book. If much of the biblical Wisdom literature teaches a person how to act, Matarasso offers numinous insights into how to be. Just as importantly, she pushes aside the iron curtain of the Enlightenment and modern Scientism, with their excessive emphasis on rationalism, in order to show us how to learn-or relearn-and use theological imagination. Many of her brief reflections remind me of the apophthegmata, the sayings of the early Christian monks, the abbas and ammas of the desert. Matarasso pushes beyond genre; Clothed in Language is part journal, part linguistic and spiritual autobiography. It is, thus, very fitting to have this volume as part of Cistercian Publications' Monastic Wisdom Series. This book will last. It is a good book for lectio-whether in refectory, office, school, or the quiet place Jesus tells us to go to when we pray. The wise (and this is a Wisdom book) won't whiz through this book. Clothed in Language's five sections, each divided by titled sub-sections containing short reflections (some only a sentence long) or poems, make the book an excellent addition to one's private prayer, one that is equal parts comfort and challenge. Matarasso can be a very tough cookie, but I would want her for a spiritual director.

Originating as a spiritual journal, Matarasso's work comes to the reader as a florilegium: reflections, sometimes as brief as a sentence, sometimes a few paragraphs, and occasionally in poems, are thematically arranged in five sections, with several sub-sections. Clothed in Language doesn't set out to offer answers or spiritual advice, but rather companionship in the struggles of contemplation, and a sharing of the moments of flashes of light and insight-Matarasso often calls them images from her mind's eye. Strung between hypothetical questions and intellectual musings, the moments of insight reveal a knowledge that is come to through love.
