About Mary A. Blaszko Helming

Mary Helming PhD, APRN, FNP-BC, AHN-BC is a family nurse practitioner, Professor of Nursing at Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Connecticut, and an advanced holistic nurse . Her research interests include spirituality in nursing, near death experience, prayer and healing, and educating nurse practitioner students about holism and integrative healthcare. Dr. Helming has over 30 years of experience as a family nurse practitioner in family practice, internal medicine, and occupational health. She has published several articles, several book chapters and she reviews for three journals. Dr. Helming served as a Co-Associate Editor for Holistic Nursing: A Handbook for Practice and has presented at AHNA conferences and nurse practitioner conferences. She is very grateful for the incredible friendship and guidance of Drs. Barbie Dossey and Lynn Keegan, and the work of her current co-editors. Dr. Deborah Shields, PhD, RN, CCRN, AHN-BC, QTTTis a Professor of Nursing at Capital University in Columbus, Ohio. She is a board certified Advanced Holistic Nurse, a perioperative staff nurse and system educator at OhioHealth, and a qualified Therapeutic Touch practitioner and teacher. She loves nursing and is passionate about exploring ways to integrate caring concepts into our lives, weaving these into heart-centered, intentional care practices for self and others. With over 40 years of experience in clinical practice and nursing education, Dr. Shields has mentored baccalaureate and graduate students interested in the holistic paradigm and practice. She has received a number of professional distinctions including Holistic Nurse of the Year (AHNA), the first AHNA Service Award, three PRISM awards for Compassion and Caring, Expert in Nursing Care (ONA), induction into the Marion Technical College Alumni Hall of Fame, and was recently named an Ohio Nursing Legend. She presents widely on a number of topics grounded in holistic practice, sharing her ideas with local, national and international interdisciplinary audiences. She was Co-Editor and contributing author to the Seventh and Eighth Editions of Dossey & Keegan's Holistic Nursing: A Handbook for Practice and served on the AHNA/ANA Holistic Nursing Scope & Standards (Third ed) and the ANA Scope & Standards (Fourth ed) workgroups. Dr. Shields serves as President of the American Holistic Nurses Credentialing Corporation (AHNCC). She served on the Board of Directors of the American Holistic Nurses Association (AHNA) and is currently the AHNA Nurse Peer Review Leader. Her current practice and scholarship includes developing holistic nursing education curricula, integrating aesthetics into practice, and theory development. Her research program involves quality of life in people living with heart failure, comfort at end-of-life/conscious death and the exploration of healing. Dr. Karen Avino, EdD, RN, AHN-BC, HWNC-BC, isthe Director of Education for the Integrative Nurse Coach Academy and the International Nurse Coach Association providing online and onsite continuing education programs for nurses. As a consultant, Dr. Avino helps healthcare organizations create optimal healing environments and integrate holistic nursing into practice. She taught Holistic Nursing and Integrative Health for 20 years through online and on campus classes at the University of Delaware. She received the Faculty Senate Excellence in Academic Advising and Mentoring Award. She also received the Delaware Excellence in Nursing Practice Award as Nurse Educator. Dr. Avino has over 40 years of experience in Maternal-Child Health, Administration, Community Health, Holistic Nursing and Nurse Coach practice. She is board certified as both an Advanced Holistic Nurse and a Health and Wellness Nurse Coach. Dr. Avino is a Reiki Master, Stress Management Instructor, HeartMath and Clinical Meditation and Imagery Practitioner. Dr. Avino is a Director-At-Large board member of the American Holistic Nurses Association and a founding leader of the Delaware Chapter (DEAHNA). She is an author and editor of Holistic Nursing: A Handbook for Practice (2016, 2022) and Core Curriculum for Holistic Nursing (2014). Dr. Avino is a Peer Reviewer for the Journal of Nursing Scholarship and Holistic Nursing Practice journals. She is an international and national speaker on holistic and integrative topics. Dr. William E. Rosa, PhD, MBE, AHN-BC, HWNC-BC, FAANP, FAAN, is currently a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Psycho-Oncology at Memorial Sloan Kettering (MSK) Cancer Center, New York. He received his BSN magna cum laude from NYU Rory Meyers College of Nursing (2009); was valedictorian of his MSN class, Hunter College (2014); and completed his PhD and Master of Bioethics as an RWJF Future of Nursing Scholar at the University of Pennsylvania (2020). Dr. Rosa spent one year with the Human Resources for Health Program in Rwanda, East Africa (2015-2016), contributing to the curriculum content for the first Masters-prepared nursing cohort in the country and completed an interprofessional palliative care clinical fellowship at MSK (2017). He is the editor of four books on leadership, global health, and holistic nursing and has contributed more than 150 publications in a host of diverse forums. Dr. Rosa has been recognized with numerous distinctions, including the international Spirit of Renewal Award from Sigma (2017); the national Lillian Wald Humanitarian Award from the National League for Nursing (2020); and the national Public Health Service Award for Distinguished Practice in Nursing from the American Nurses Association (2020). He serves on the editorial board for theJournal of Hospice & Palliative Nursingand as a board member for multiple global health and palliative care organizations.Dr. Rosa is a 2020-2021 International Council of Nurses Global Nursing Leadership Institute Scholar, a highly competitive global policy and leadership development program, and serves as the Designated International Association for Hospice & Palliative Care Advocacy Focal Point for the United States of America.He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing, the American Association of Nurse Practitioners, the American College of Critical Care Medicine, and the New York Academy of Medicine.
