The Ingenious Hidalgo Don Quixote De La Mancha Summary

The Ingenious Hidalgo Don Quixote De La Mancha by John Rutherford

Recounting the adventures of Don Quixote and his faithful squire, Sancho Panza, Cervantes' satirical romance (1605-1615) is one of the most enduringly popular classics ever written. The work was originally planned as a moral fable, using parody to attack chivalry romances and the pernicious effect they had on readers. In the course of writing, however, the characters gain depth and complexity and the burlesque form Cervantes had originally adopted gives way to a more subtle and powerful humour.

About John Rutherford

Miguel de Cervantes Saaverda's (1547-1616) life was occupied with a struggle to earn a livelihood from literature and humble government employment. As well as Don Quixote, he wrote a number of plays and a collection of highly accomplished short stories, Exemplary Tales (1613). John Rutherford is a Fellow of the Queen's College Oxford and a Senior Lecturer in Spanish and Spanish American literature. He has translated Leopoldo's La Regenta for Penguin Classics.
