Tuning the Therapeutic Instrument Summary

Tuning the Therapeutic Instrument: Affective Learning of Psychotherapy by Jill Savege Scharff

This book shows how the therapist's use of self, the key ingredient of successful treatment, can be developed into a sensitive instrument for therapy. With firsthand accounts of experiencing affective learning, the Scharffs take us through their work with clinicians studying dynamic psychotherapy in a group setting. Relevant to mental health professionals at all levels of expertise, this book is written for therapists invested in their own learning, teaching, and practice. Only by being open to ourselves, the Scharffs show, can we be truly responsive to our patients.

Tuning the Therapeutic Instrument Reviews

Jill and David Scharff's latest book sustains and elaborates their work on object relations therapy. It is an intelligent, lucid, and enriching book on how the therapist can integrate concrete knowledge and affective awareness in the ordinary work of psychotherapy. -- Christopher Bollas, PhD, British Psychoanalytical Society
This brilliant and inspired book will quickly become a classic. The Scharffs, their colleagues, and students describe in detail and depth how psychotherapy can be taught and learned at both a cognitive and emotional level. -- Earl Hopper, Ph.D.
Object relations theory has moved into the central focus of contemporary clinical work. In Tuning the Therapeutic Instrument, Jill and David Scharff bring object relations theory alive by focusing on cognitive learning in the context of alertness to affective reactions. This facilitates an intense learning experience. The interpersonal relations of small groups, large groups, couples, and the family replay and amplify the internal world of object relations. This reactivation facilitates the diagnosis of those intrapsychic structures, their primitive regressive manifestations, as well as their resolution in interpretive work. All is abundantly illustrated with interactions between students and teachers in the group process. I highly recommend this book to clinicians, researchers, and educators. -- Otto Kernberg, M.D.
