The book aims to describe, analyzse and criticize the more important theories in philosophical psychology (or philosophy of mind) which have become current since 1945. It outlines the main conclusions of various significant contributors to philosophical thought in this area, including Wittgenstein, Levi Strauss, B.F. Skinner, Gilbert Ryle, Merleau Ponty, J.J.C. Smart, Donald Davidson and Thomas Nagel. Theories discussed include behaviourism, functionalism, structuralism and the philosophy of linguistic analysis. The chapters covering French philosophers constitute the first assessment of the place of continental philosophy in theories of the mind.
