Silchester Summary

Silchester: Life on the Dig by Jenny Halstead

The Roman Town at Silchester, Calleva Atrebatum, was a working archaeological dig - the University of Reading Field School - which took place every summer for eighteen years. Taking advantage of the last opportunity to record 'life on the dig' in 2014, artist Jenny Halstead spent the summer creating and collating material for a beautiful and historic book. Jenny's superior draughtsmanship, her eye for colour and her wide variety of techniques produce evocative, lively images. The resulting book is a fitting and enduring record of this historic episode in the life of an ancient city.

About Jenny Halstead

JennyHalstead studied Art and Design at the Sutton & Cheam School of Art followed by a Guest Scholarship at the Royal Academy Schools, London. She then trained and worked as a medical artist and natural history illustrator, but for the last decade has enjoyed the freedom of expressing herself across a much wider spectrum. She is well-known and widely admired, nationally and internationally for her draughtsmanship, her modelling of detail and her use of colour. She was artist in residence at the Harris Garden, Reading University, in 2012 and published 'An artist's year in the Harris Garden' with Two Rivers Press in 2013. She is a Fellow of the Medical Artists Association of GB and a Member of the Pastel Society UK.
