Cut-throat Jake and his ugly crew are busy celebrating on Cactus Island, surrounded by their stolen treasure. So they are caught off guard when Captain Pugwash and his men arrive disguised as a sea monster.

But more surprises are to follow for all the pirates - when the real sea monster turns up to investigate, and Pugwash's crew are stranded by high tide.

The stories are wonderfully told: simple, clear language that stays on course... and of course the illustrations are so enduringly distinctive, with Pugwash of the late Pavarotti-like proportions. || 5 stars. Captain Pugwash is a favourite with many children and this book will delight pirate fans everywhere. || A delightful bedtime book to read aloud for age 5+.

Über John Ryan

John Ryan was born in Edinburgh and spent his early childhood in the UK and Morocco before moving back to England, where he worked for seven years as Assistant Art Master of Harrow School. Captain Pugwash first set sail over 50 years ago as a strip cartoon. Since then he has featured in books, films and theatres all over the world. Before his death in 2009 aged 88, John lived in Rye, Sussex, the home of smugglers in years gone by, with his wife Priscilla, who is also an artist. He has three children and a regular crew of grandchildren.
