Hugh Brogan was born in 1936. In his youth he was a Scholar and Fellow of St John's College, Cambridge. Later he was the R.A. Butler Professor of History at the University of Essex where, since retiring, he has held a research professorship. Among his books are biographies of Arthur Ransome and John F. Kennedy, and the Penguin History of the United States.
