Ready to Paint Fantasy Art: Dragons Reviews

Ready To Paint has done it again; this time with a brand new series that shows you how to paint fantasy style. This first title deals with depicting dragons, those mythical beasts so beloved of fantasy novels in watercolors. The other books in this series have all had one thing in common (apart from the unique idea of the tracings that is). They all showed how to paint reality; now this series shows the opposite and thus has to deal with some unique problems. As with all the other titles there is a short section on what to buy and how to transfer the tracings, then it is on with the projects. There are five of these, all showing dragons at their most graceful and dangerous - no cuteness here - shown being born of fire, surveying an icy realm, destroying a town, flying, guarding a tower and in a moorland landscape. Each project (apart from the tower one) is described in at least thirty illustrated steps, each showing what is added and how to do it. This adds up to a pretty foolproof way of producing some impressive art, and of course you learn plenty of tips about this type of art as you go. A good start to a new series.-Myshelf.com The Ready to Paint series are a really useful addition for artist wishing to practice painting techniques without worrying about the drawing first. Each book carries several reusable drawings ready for tracing and once this step is done the artist can follow Marc's instruction to create realistic and believable dragons. My two oldest grandchildren (9 and 12) were here last week and seized on this book with glee - using the trace-outs they had great fun on painting their own dragon artworks. They were able to enjoy using colours without the concern of getting the initial drawing right. Marc gives an overview of all the materials needed for each project including the colours he uses which is useful. He uses acrylic in this book in both thicker oil style and in translucent watercolour type glazes. Many people don't realise just how versatile acrylics can be so its good to see them used to their best capacity. The five inspirational projects included in the book use a variety of different dragons in varying forms, from babies emerging from the earth's core to harbingers of weather in Storm-bringer and a vengeful fire-breathing dragon in Fire-storm - this was the painting that both grandchildren chose. The instruction for each demo are very easy to understand and the techniques used easily achievable by any artist even beginners as shown by the grandchildren! They chose to use watercolour pencils ( less messy with kids) and thoroughly enjoyed their paintings and were pleased with the results. An inspiring book for any aspiring Fantasy artist and one that children who love the thought of dragons and fantasy will love to own and get great enjoyment from.-JeannieZelos.com
