Real Research teaches students about each step in the research process within the context of a particular research method. Each chapter begins with a description of the method and the logic that underlies it, so that students can see how each and every step in the research process fits within the logic of that particular method. Then the chapter goes on to present all of the steps of research as they relate to that particular method, from writing research questions through analysis.

Two appendices, one on reviewing the literature and the other on writing research proposals, expose students to useful, practical strategies including how to search online databases for existing literature, how to avoid plagiarizing, how to craft a literature review, and the aim and parts of a good research proposal.
