About John Forster

John Forster (1812-1876), author, biographer and critic, was born in Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Forster's biography of his close friend and advisee, Charles Dickens, was the first written and continues to be the basis for much of what we know about the author. The biography contains many examples of personal correspondence between the two men and offers a unique insight into one of the most influential writers in English Literature. Dr Furneaux, is a Reader in Victorian Literature at the University of Leicester, whose main research interests are in gender, sexuality, medicine and the Victorian novel. She is author of Queer Dickens: Erotics, Families, Masculinities (Oxford University Press, 2009) which explores the affirmative representations of same-sex desire and non-normative 'families of choice' in the novels of Dickens. Jane Smiley is the best-selling author of the award-winning A Thousand Acres and of Charles Dickens, a biography.
