Alberto Morrocco Summary

Alberto Morrocco by Victoria Keller

Alberto Morrocco, flamboyant, talented and versatile, is one of the grand old men of Scottish painting. Born in Aberdeen in 1917 of Italian parents, Morrocco is one of a group of Italo-Scots who have enlivened Scottish culture this century. A superb draughtsman and a very able and perceptive portrait painter, he is most renowned today for his still-lifes and his utterly individual and intensely coloured figurative paintings based on Italian themes. Clowns, beachboys, peasant women and fruit-sellers inhabit a hauntingly imaginative world pervaded by the warmth of the Mediterranean. This book, the first monograph on Morrocco, is published to coincide with a major career restrospective exhibition celebrating his 75th birthday. Alberto Morrocco, RSA, RSW, RP, RGI, LL.D, OBE, was born in Aberdeen in December 1917. Head of Painting at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, Dundee, from 1950 until 1982, he has had over 30 solo exhibitions in his career and is represented in very many public and private collections in Britain, Europe and America. Victoria Keller, a free-lance art historian, was Assistant Director of the 369 Gallery in Edinburgh from 1983 to 1991. Clara Young has been Keeper of Art at Dundee Art Galleries and Museums since 1980.
