A More Perfect Union Summary

A More Perfect Union by Tammye Huf

When Henry O'Toole escapes the Irish famine and sails to America, he doesn't expect the anti-Irish prejudices that await him. Determined never to starve again, he changes his name to Henry Taylor to secure a job and safeguard his future. Traveling south to Virginia, he meets Sarah, a slave woman torn from her family and sold to another plantation. There she must navigate the power system of the white masters, as well as the hierarchy of her fellow slaves.Even though Henry's white skin represents the oppression Sarah suffers under, and even though having Sarah at his side would force Henry to abandon his hopes of prosperity, their attraction is undeniable and they fall in love. But in 1849 on a Virginian plantation, inter-racial marriage is not only illegal but considered to be an ungodly abomination. No matter how much they want to be together, Sarah is trapped on Jubilee Plantation, owned by another man. This is a love story of epic proportions - a forbidden relationship that has been forged in secrecy, and faces betrayal and jeopardy at every turn.

'Amidst hunger, deprivation and the whimsical cruelties of slavery, two people dare to steal happiness. This graceful, assured debut novel creates an unusual slave narrative that starts in potato-famine Ireland and deftly weaves a touching American love story. The deceptively easy prose bristles with danger and possibility and I loved the at once thrilling and gentle pace of the novel. Tammye Huf is a wonderful storyteller.'-Marina Salandy-Brown; 'A riveting love story across the challenges of race and poverty... Huf's delicate blend of passion and compassion is compelling, impressive and never sentimental.'-Andrea Stuart; 'Ambitious, sweeping, unafraid of acknowledging the complexity of the times and guaranteed to leave you welling up, this is storytelling at its finest.'-Francesca Brown, Stylist magazine; 'This moving debut novel by Huf, an American writer living in Britain, is about a seemingly doomed love affair that plays out against the backdrop of 1840s Virginia. Henry Taylor is a travelling Irish blacksmith who arrives on the Jubilee Plantation to ply his trade; Sarah is a house slave, owned by the plantation's master. Their attraction to one another faces what appear to be insurmountable obstacles, but they persist against the odds. Her story offers a glimpse of the redemptive power of love amid the inhumanity.'-Nick Rennison, The Sunday Times; 'I need to talk about this book for a hot second! I started it early evening yesterday and only physically put it down around 2:30am because my body was begging for sleep and I didn't want to miss anything by nodding off... Tammye is an amazing writer... Definitely a book you must add to your tbr!'-The Secret World of a Book
