Summary

This study analyzes song lyrics to describe how women have traditionally been depicted in rock 'n' roll. The authors argue that male songwriters have either exploited or worshipped women, and that these perceptions will only change when women take control and write the words themselves.

The Sex Revolts Summary

The Sex Revolts: Gender, Rebellion & Rock n'Roll by Simon Reynolds

The Sex Revolts is the first book to look at rebellion and rock ?n? roll through the lens of gender. It argues that rock music is most thrilling when it is most misogynist and macho. Provocative and passionately argued, the book walks the tightrope between a rock fan?s excitement, and a critic?s awareness of the music?s darker undercurrents. It sheds new light on the angry young men (The Rolling Stones, The Doors, Iggy Pop, The Sex Pistols, and Nirvana) and the psychedelic mystics (Van Morrison, Jimi Hendrix, Syd Barrett and Brian Eno) that make up the rock?n?roll pantheon. The Sex Revolts is rich cocktail of rock criticism, cultural studies and feminist theory.

The Sex Revolts Reviews

?What Reynolds and Press have achieved with The Sex Revolts is formidable: we may never be able to listen to rock music in the same way again? Observer ?Intelligent writing about rock music is rare...Of course, dull rock biographies will still sell more copies, but this book may well spark its readers into making a few cultural excavations of their own? Independent on Sunday ?Reynolds and Press have opened up a new frontier of critical dissension and contumely. For that, all those who love rock should salute them? New Statesman
