The contributors are Alec Clifton-Taylor (medieval period), Roy Strong (Tudors and Stuarts), Robert Furneaux Jordan ("age of grandeur"), John Julius Norwich (Palladian), John Summerson (Regency), Mark Girouard (Victorian), Patrick Nuttgeus (Edwardian) and Hugh Casson (1920-1975).
