The Journal of Watkin Stench Summary

The Journal of Watkin Stench by Meredith Hooper

The Journal of Watkin Stench tells the story - from the viewpoint of the ship's rats - of the arrival of the First Fleet in Botany Bay, Australia. Much of it is drawn from the real journals of the young marine officer Captain Walter Tench in 1788, who commented on the rats - 'not only numerous, but formidable'. But here, it is the talkative young black rat, Watkin Stench, who records the antics of the humans.

A fast-moving, enjoyable story, based soundly on fact, Watkin Stench energetically conveys the ups and downs of the lives of the rats of the First Fleet.

Previously published by Lutterworth Press this revised edition appears for the first time in the Hodder Silver list.

The Journal of Watkin Stench Reviews

In his pert, lively, observant and sometimes lyrical style, Watkin records the bleakness and strangeness that faced the pioneer newcomers. * Naomi Lewis in TES *
A great book for anyone who has an urge to be an explorer * Financial Times *
The journal opens with a sustained passage of suspense generated by the excitement of arrival in a strange land and never lacks that kind of interest to the end. Based on fact, it reads like the best fiction ... * The Junior Bookshelf *
Emphatically written ... we experience the raw hardships and extreme difficulties affecting the horrifyingly interwoven lives of rats and men. A good read ... * Books for Keeps *
This clever spoof history certainly deserves to be included among the host of celebratory books on early Australian history. * Growing Point *
