An Introduction to English Language Summary

An Introduction to English Language by Koenraad Kuiper

Back for its fourth edition, this core textbook offers a clear and engaging introduction to the building blocks of the English language, namely its words, sounds and sentences. Assuming no prior knowledge, this text combines accessibility with depth and is an ideal companion for anyone with an interest in how language works. Written by experienced and respected lecturers in the field, this book strips the subject down to its bare bones and offers detailed and clear explanations of key topics and theories, including variation in vocabularies, the International Phonetic Alphabet and relevance theory in relation to pragmatics. This is essential reading for undergraduate students of English language and linguistics. It is also a valuable resource for students on ESOL courses and teachers of English as a second or foreign language. It can be used as a stand-alone introductory text, or as a precursor to more advanced material. New to this Edition: - Brand new section on pragmatics, complete with downloadable e-resources available on the companion website - Fully revised and updated throughout, with a fresh text design and new examples - References to cognition and language introduced throughout the book in an accessible way

An Introduction to English Language Reviews

'The book gives a comprehensive overview of linguistic frameworks and the step-by-step approach will work particularly well for first year students. I like the clear, user-friendly descriptions throughout the text and the fact that it demands no prior knowledge of linguistics.' - Christina Wright, University of Worcester, UK 'This is a vast and comprehensive resource for every teacher and learner of the English language. It covers aspects of the English language with a breadth that keeps astonishing me. It engages the reader in many forms - not just exercises - and stands out as the primary go-to source.' - Dr Michael Pace-Sigge, University of Eastern Finland, Finland 'An Introduction to English Language is a great course book for use in English and linguistics classes at the undergraduate and graduate level. It covers all the micro fields of linguistics, presents a clear explanation of core concepts, and immerses students in the English language in a systematic way. With its extensive exercises, further reading suggestions, glossaries, and companion resources, I highly recommend this book for students and teachers.' - Dr Melike Bas, Amasya University, Turkey
