Modern Life Reviews

In Modern Life (TeNeues), French illustrator Jean Jullien s clever and instantly relatable works lampoon contemporary culture. Ripe with visual language and semantics, Jullien s collection of cartoonish illustrations is a proverbial children s book for adults. Dani Vernon Surface #134 DECEMBER 2016 / JANUARY 2017, p. 114

About Jean Jullien

Jean Jullien was born in 1983 in the city of Cholet in France. After high school, Jean Jullien studied for his post-baccalaureat in graphic design at Le Paraclet in Brittany, where he was introduced to the work of French graphic artists and illustrators such as Tomi Ungerer, Raymond Savignac, and studio M/M Paris. Jean then moved to London to carry on studying graphic design at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in 2008, followed closely by a Masters in Arts Communication at the Royal College of Art.Today, Jean Jullien's instantly recognizable signature style has seen him become one of the most sought after illustrators around. Often character based, his work is always well observed, keenly aware of its surroundings, and often funny. His practice ranges from illustration to photography, video, costumes, installations, books, posters, and clothing to create a coherent, yet eclectic body of work. Voted by Creativity 50 as one of The Most Creative People of the Year 2015, Jean Jullien also has a prominent and established voice in the newspaper and magazine realm and a blossoming presence in the art, gallery, and museum world. Jean Jullien's achievements and projects in the field of advertising and design campaigns further point to yet another aspect of his remarkable talent: his inimitable ability to connect to the public's sense of the everyday, and his ability to encapsulate and appreciate the importance of various lifestyles. It is in the hopes of capturing what is relevant and of the moment, but also recognizable and instantly relatable, that clients such as Nike, Stella Artois, Uniqlo, Eurostar, Verizon, and TFL, have reached out to Jean Jullien for their campaigns. Jean Jullien: Modern Life is his first monograph.
