Summary
In this sequence of sketches, the diarist brings to life 14 friends who, unknowingly, formed his values, framed his views and added relish to his days. Among others they include Robert Byron swimming in the Bay of Naples, and Rosamond Lehmann communing through a medium with dead loved ones.

About James Lees-Milne
James Lees-Milne died in 1997. Once Country Houses Secretary of the National Trust, he is now best known for his memoirs and diaries, described by Jeremy Lewis as second to none in their comicality, rueful self-knowledge and feline observations.
