Summary

The universality of mathematical techniques is demonstrated through a wide variety of applications and a description of basic methods for their analysis. The author places equal importance on difference and differential equations, showing how they complement and intertwine in describing natural phenomena.

Mathematical Modelling in One Dimension Summary

Mathematical Modelling in One Dimension: An Introduction via Difference and Differential Equations by Jacek Banasiak (University of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa)

Mathematical Modelling in One Dimension demonstrates the universality of mathematical techniques through a wide variety of applications. Learn how the same mathematical idea governs loan repayments, drug accumulation in tissues or growth of a population, or how the same argument can be used to find the trajectory of a dog pursuing a hare, the trajectory of a self-guided missile or the shape of a satellite dish. The author places equal importance on difference and differential equations, showing how they complement and intertwine in describing natural phenomena.

About Jacek Banasiak (University of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa)

Jacek Banasiak studied mathematics at the Technical University of Lodz, obtained his PhD from Strathclyde University, Glasgow, his DSc (habilitation) from the University of Warsaw and received the state title of Professor in Poland in 2007. He is currently a Research Professor in the School of Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science at the University of KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa and an Extraordinary Professor at the Technical University of Lodz.
