Radiant Landscapes Reviews

Loughman tiles while others toil. Tiles, in geometric shapes cut from fabric, are to the quilter what tesserae are to mosaicists. The tiles add background and movement, color and light. Loughman echoes elements of impressionist and pointillist art by manipulating light on quilts as Cezanne and Seurat did with small brush strokes on canvas. Tiling large areas of your quilts, she writes, allows you, in some ways, to follow in these master painters' footsteps. By playing with light and color, she designs additional dimensions to quilted landscapes, thereby creating smashing results. Her instruction book does not begin with the tiles, however: she starts with design; teaches color and value and hue; and considers fabric selection, including a chapter on customizing fabric through dyeing and painting. After explaining how to make, place, and stitch down the tiles, Loughman works through construction of four landscape projects. These projects are sophisticated, certainly more dramatic than her writing, which borders on the banal. Loughman's book is made more beautiful to look at by her husband's vacation photography. Publishers Weekly, 12/3/12 Bestselling author Gloria Loughman is back with more innovative techniques in her latest book. Gloria encourages readers to pay attention to light as she evokes the spirits of impressionist painters like Monet and Renoir. In this technique-based book, Gloria maps out the process of designing, selecting fabrics, using her tiling method for intriguing backgrounds, and adding foregrounds. Along the way she also provides guidance and examples for choosing inspiration for quilts, understanding color and composition, and dyeing unique fabrics. Not ready to design your own quilt yet? At the end of the book, Gloria provides patterns for four diverse quilts that will get you comfortable with her techniques and inspire you to move on to your own unique projects later. The lush and inspirational photography and diagrams will have you rushing to your stash or local quilt shop for nature-inspired fabrics to make your own 'radiant landscapes.' About Gloria Loughman

Gloria Loughman lives in Kerang, a small Australian town famous for its duck shooting and ibis rookery. She is married and has three daughters. Gloria trained as a secondary school teacher and worked mainly in literacy and special education faculties. Her initiation into the world of patchwork occurred approximately sixteen years ago, when she was recovering from a rugged course of chemotherapy.

Over the years she has dabbled in many areas including strip piecing, bargello, colorwash, fabric dyeing and painting, and machine embroidery. After completing studies in design and color as part of a Diploma of Art in 1996, she began to make her large vivid landscape quilts depicting the Australian bush. These quilts have won many major awards in Australia, Europe, Japan, and the United States. Her quilt Kimberley Mystique was the winner of Australia's most prestigious national quilting award in 2003.

Gloria loves sharing her knowledge and skills with others. She likes to challenge her students to design their own landscape quilts but is also happy to provide patterns. Many students come back for a second or third class.

As well as being in demand as a teacher, Gloria has curated six exhibitions of Australian quilts to the United States and has had the privilege of judging at many major shows. Her work has been featured in many books and magazines.

What began as a therapy has developed into a passion and has given Gloria the opportunity to travel the world exhibiting her quilts, teaching classes, and meeting lots of wonderful people.
