The Great Gatsby follows a cast of vibrant characters who reside in the fictional towns of West Egg and East Egg on wealthy Long Island. The book is set in the summer of 1922 and revolves around the mysterious Jay Gatsby who hosts lavish parties for the rich and beautiful yet is rarely seen at them and is mysteriously unknown by all his guests.
Nick Carraway, a Yale alumnus and the core narrator, moves to New York to find employment and rents a bungalow next to Gatsby’s estate. He quickly finds himself caught up in Gatsby’s world and intertwined with the complicated relationships between the people he meets.

Gatsby’s obsession with his former lover, Daisy Buchanan, is at the core of the story which explores themes of excess and decadence, passion, idealism, classism, and social upheaval. It reveals insight into life in the Roaring Twenties for the wealthy and is based on author F. Scott Fitzgerald’s own experience of parties on Long Island as a young writer.
The Great Gatsby is considered by many to be Fitzgerald’s finest accomplishment and has been acclaimed by many generations of readers, often cited as ‘the great American novel’. It was nominated as one of America's best-loved novels by PBS's The Great American Read and has been adapted into a film most recently starring Leonardo Di Caprio in 2013.
