Multiculturalism and Education Summary

Multiculturalism and Education by Dr Richard Race

There is a need to rethink education studies in these times of change, in terms of literacies and technologies, conflict and environmental concerns, and a need for authoritative texts addressing the key areas within education; sociology, child and infant development, social justice, policy, social welfare and development - and multiculturalism. This popular text provides approaches to the theoretical perspectives and frameworks and focuses on the relevant literature surrounding multiculturalism for today's students. This new edition includes a completely new contemporary chapter on the notion of multicultural citizenship and new integrationist policies in England, including the latest research on citizenship, immigration and integration as applied to worldwide education policy-making. Including extensive examples of empirical research, study questions, updated references and website resources, Multiculturalism and Education 2e is essential reading for all those studying multiculturalism, at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, within education and the wider social sciences today.

Multiculturalism and Education Reviews

In this authoritative book Richard Race lends us his wisdom to wade through the complexities and passions of multicultural education. His hopeful message that citizenship education and inclusive curriculum can open doors to cross-cultural understandings is powerful and illuminating. A must in the toolbox of every educational professional and every student who cares! * Heidi Safia Mirza, Professor of Race, Faith and Culture, Goldsmiths University, UK *
Despite the best intentions of many politicians in the UK and elsewhere, multiculturalism just won't go away. The world just keeps on getting more global and more diverse, and more preoccupied with the challenges that globalism and diversity pose. As Richard Race argues, multicultural education matters more than ever before. But words like 'culture', 'integration' and 'multiculturalism' are complicated, indeed messy, challenging teachers and policy-makers alike. In a cluttered and muddied field of enquiry, Race brings clarity of vision - not just to the terminology which overwhelms the voter, the student and the trainee teacher, but also to the ways these ideas are articulated by key theorists and in government reports, and to the implications of these ideas for curriculum and pedagogy. The central value of this book lies in the way it draws together theory and empirical research, political pronouncements and the views of practitioners, social context and classroom practice. Race asks whether multiculturalism is still useful to us as an idea and as an ethos: not to echo those doom merchants who find crisis and conflict at every turn, but to ask, can we do this better? The book entails a fine-grained analysis that never loses sight of the bigger picture; it moves deftly from discussion of policy into classrooms, and then back into loftier debates around citizenship, interculturalism and integration. Indeed, it models the very critical and reflective dialogue that Race calls for in debates about education and multiculturalism. Read it. * Greg Noble, Professor, University of Western Sydney, Australia *
In this revised version of the book Richard Race shows how contemporary debates in multiculturalism have been shaped by policy and international events. The scope of this book is outstanding and comprehensive. The author covers debates around assimilation, citizenship and faith schools which are sure to be of interest to students of any level of study. For the more general reader, Race provides an introduction to themes of multiculturalism and citizenship but the book will also introduce post-graduate and doctoral students to material which will enhance their grasp of social theory. This is an essential book for anyone who is interested in the trajectory of multiculturalism in our society. * John Preston, Professor of Education, University of East London, UK *
The contradictions of neoliberal approaches to 'race' equality over the last fourteen years have resulted in education curricula in schools and teacher education becoming deracialised. Whilst 'race' is erased from policy it seems to be hyper-visible in society; the growing resentment of immigrants is set against the contradictory rhetoric of tolerance. In this book Race demonstrates why and how multiculturalism remains important and relevant, providing insights into the notions of multiculturalism and citizenship. * Vini Lander, Professor of Education, Edge Hill University, UK *
A most timely revised edition of this key text - a major resource and an indispensable point of reference for everyone interested in this vital area of study. * Gary McCulloch, Professor and Head of Department of Humanities and Social Sciences, Institute of Education, University of London, UK *
This book deserves a wide readership. Its greatest strength is Richard Race's critical engagement with fundamental issues such as the relationship between school, education policy and the vision for inclusion and equality. * Educational Review *
