Why Peacekeeping Fails Summary

Why Peacekeeping Fails by D. Jett

Dennis C. Jett examines why peacekeeping operations fail by comparing the unsuccessful attempt at peacekeeping in Angola with the successful effort in Mozambique, alongside a wide range of other peacekeeping experiences. The book argues that while the causes of past peacekeeping failures can be identified, the chances for success will be difficult to improve because of the way such operations are initiated and conducted, and the way the United Nations operates as an organization. Jett reviews the history of peacekeeping and the evolution in the number, size, scope, and cost of peacekeeping missions. He also explains why peacekeeping has become more necessary, possible, and desired and yet, at the same time, more complex, more difficult, and less frequently used. The book takes a hard look at the UN's actions and provides useful information for understanding current conflicts.

Why Peacekeeping Fails Reviews

'Dennis Jett has written a compelling book that combines scholarly analysis with the personal observations of a seasoned diplomat. Jett not only highlights recurrent shortcomings in peace implementation in 1990s Africa but offers cogent, experience-based fixes that can help to keep history from repeating itself, in Africa and elsewhere, as peacekeepers grapple with the post-conflict situations of the decade to come.' - Dr. William J. Durch, Senior Associate, The Henry L. Stimson Center, Washington, D.C. 'By combining a general review of the evolution of United Nations peacekeeping with a more detailed comparison of success and failure in Mozambique and Angola, Dennis Jett provides unusually cogent insights. If his observations are taken to heart, there will be more successes and fewer failures.' - Robert B. Oakely, Retired Ambassador, Institute for National Strategic Studies 'This is a well-researched and insightful look at a controversial activity, particularly because of recent peacekeeping failures in Bosnia and Somalia.' - Booklist
