Leadership Standards in Action Summary

Leadership Standards in Action: The School Principal as Servant-Leader by Cade Brumley

Leadership Standards for Action: The School Principal as Servant-Leader is a powerful resource for aspiring principals, practicing principals, district leadership, and university faculty. The book responsibly unpacks the metaphor of principal as servant leader to the school's people and purpose. As a framework, the six ISLLC Standards of Educational Leadership are examined through the lens of a principal as servant leader. The text is rich with insights from a former school principal passionate about living and leading in a more caring, effective, and humanistic manner that seeks results in student learning and organizational health. Using a combination of theoretical research, practical lessons, and case story, the book illuminates the possibilities for the school principal within the reality of today's accountability era. Topics within the book include the principalship, servant-leadership, visionary leadership, instructional leadership, organizational leadership, collaborative leadership, ethical leadership, and political leadership. This book will enrich the professional views and practice of educators willing to embark on the journey of its contents.

Leadership Standards in Action Reviews

As the standards movement progresses, Brumley argues that unless leaders are connected to passion, purpose, and servant-leadership, they will fail. A timely and powerful reminder of what's at the core of school leadership. -- Michael Fullan, Professor, University of Toronto
I really loved the book. Brumley's use of research, poetry, and experiences from real principals to examine concepts is exceptional. This should be a best seller! -- Andrea Martin, Executive Director, Louisiana Association of Principals
The most important thing about servant leadership is putting it into practice. Dr. Brumley offers school principals a comprehensive guide to doing exactly that. This translation of servant leadership into daily practices will make school principals more effective in serving students and school communities. -- Kent M. Keith, Greenleaf Center for Servant-Leadership, CEO and Author of The Case for Servant Leadership
[It] encompasses every element necessary for school principals to be successful as servant leaders in an ever-changing society. This book fulfills a long-awaited demand for progressive principals in a very real world, challenged with monumental expectations to meet multiple needs within their learning communities. -- Darin Jolly, Principal, Mabank Middle School, Mabank Texas
The roles, responsibilities, and expectations of today's school leaders have changed. As a result, the type of leadership needed has also evolved. In order to successfully effect change in today's schools, a leader must not see the position as a job but as more of a calling. This book is a must-read for those who believe they have what it takes to accept the challenge of educational leadership. -- Ruth Ray-Jackson, Associate Professor & Chair, Louisiana State University-Shreveport
