Form & Foliage Guide to Trees & Shrubs Summary

Form & Foliage Guide to Trees & Shrubs by Susin Chow

Trees tell the story of our lives in the garden - the cycle of the seasons, the passing of years and even of generations. They are the souls of nature, keepers of time. And in the same way, shrubs, though smaller in stature, are the defining features that underpin a garden, a space, a vision and an ideal. This A-Z guide comprises a selection of the most stunning trees and shrubs, arranged according to whether they are flowering, foliage, deciduous, evergreen or fruiting. It presents over 250 plant entries each featuring descriptions and important cultivation information, accompanied by full-page photographs and other detail shots. This selection is not intended to be definitive; rather, it is a collection of favourites, an introduction to the beautiful and complex world of trees and shrubs.

Form & Foliage Guide to Trees & Shrubs Reviews

Australian publisher Murdoch Books have produced an attractive introduction to shrubs and trees. It is compiled by Susin Leong and Tracy Loughlin who have selected their favourites and divided them between flowering and foliage interest, evergreen and deciduous and fruit trees. The backbone of every garden they can add colour, shape and form to a garden throughout the year. From the silvery bark of the silver birch to the vibrant autumnal hues of the acers, the red-tipped spring leaves of photinia and pieris to the purple-leaved cotinus, the red fruit of the apple and the gold of the plum, trees and shrubs offer a diverse range of features to suit every garden and situation. Lavishly illustrated and with well-written text, the only drawback is the inclusion of trees and shrubs not hardy in the UK and it will take a reasonably experienced gardener to recognise these. Nevertheless it is a handy reference for gardeners looking for something a little special to plant in their garden. - Lucy Watson
