Thin Air Reviews

William Harriman is a retired civil servant, a well-read and friendly man in his late 70s. He has lost the two people he cares most about in the world, his wife Eve has died, and his son Matthew suffers from mental instability after a breakdown. Neither can he turn for comfort to his daughter Claire, with whom he has a fractious relationship. His other relations, the Harrimans, live in a rundown family home in Shropshire, knee-deep in stray dogs and dog memorabilia. Linking William's two worlds is Janice Harper, who, restless with country living and walking dogs for the Harrimans, comes to London to change her life. Gee has always been an unusual writer, combining the perceptive character observation of a William Trevor with her own highly individual brand of plotting. This is her most involving and strongly written book yet.
