Summary

At the end of the 20th century an elderly poet wanders the streets of Vilnius, haunted by a terrible secret. His memories of World War II have been buried for 50 years, but seeing the young women in the ghetto, he is reminded of the girl he once loved, and betrayed, and so he tells her story.

The Last Girl Summary

The Last Girl by Stephen Collishaw

In the dying days of the twentieth century an elderly poet wanders the streets of Vilnius, haunted by a terrible secret. His memories of the Second World War have been buried for fifty years, but now, as he picks his way through the rubble of the ghetto, and looks in the faces of young women he passes, he is reminded of the girl he once loved - and betrayed - and finds himself once again compelled to tell her story. In a decaying tenement a washerwoman struggles between the twilight world of Vilnius's brothels and her flickering hopes of building a better life for her children. Her son needs USD 1000 if he is to escape to England, and she knows of only one way to earn such an impossible amount of money. Her life, and the poet's, weave between each other as they both step carefully around the cracks of the past, in search of any kind of peace. And through the tangled debris of Lithuania's past and present, the story of a beautiful Jewish girl and a young poet - whose love was ultimately not strong enough to save her from the persecution of the Russians, or from the final, deadly designs of the Nazis - coils its way to the surface and demands to be told.

The Last Girl Reviews

Compellingly readable, and set in Lithuania, so good on detail and atmostphere it's hard to believe it wasn't written by someone born and bred there. It certainly puts the reputation of its talented author on the map. - Books of the Year, Independent on Sunday

Astoundingly complex ... tense, vivid, effortlessly real... successfully encompasses passion, morality, history and art - Julie Myerson, The Guardian

Post-Soviet absurdity and an unflinching history rendered in effective prose. - Kirkus

Wonderful...that rare novel which no one, having once read, will be able to forget. - Alan Sillitoe

I liked this novel very much. It has energy and it has assurance, and the story is really powerful. Stephan Collishaw has a great gift for showing the dailiness of terrible times . . . This sense of lived reality really touches one's imagination. The betrayals and compromises which these characters have to negotiate feel so intimate. - Helen Dunmore, author of The Siege

When i finished reading The Last Girl, I felt like someone who had stumbled up a flight of steps into the sunlights from the confines of a windowless, unlit cellar - James Kay
