The monk Augustine, sent by the Pope to bring Christianity to a heathen people, arrived in Kent in 597. Published to coincide with English Heritage's opening of a visitor's centre at St Augustine's Abbey in Canterbury to mark the 1400th anniversary of this event, this book describes the Abbey and its role in the making of the English identity. It charts the Abbey's religious, architectural, artistic and intellectual achievements, and supplements the text with illustrations which include reconstructions, plans and photographs.
