Rebel Kerry: Summary

Rebel Kerry:: From the Pages of 'The Kerryman' by Simon Brouder (Journalist, The Kerryman)

'The Kerryman' newspaper was established in 1904 and from the start was staunchly republican in its outlook. This brought it into regular conflict with the British establishment and on several occasions it was prevented from publishing, but consistently and defiantly bounced back. Well-known historians Ryle Dwyer, Helene O'Keeffe and Simon Brouder give accounts of all the significant events in Kerry from the 1916 Rising through to the end of the Civil War. These include the chaotic attempt to land arms from the German ship 'Aud', the tragic and horrifying death of Thomas Ashe, the Free State landings at Fenit and elsewhere during the Civil War and the grim atrocities of March 1923 across the county. Contemporary reports from the paper have also been included, which bring the events of the time very much to life.
