For a variety of reasons, primarily historical, political and geographical, Northern Ireland has a legal system which, while reflecting closely that of England and Wales is, at the same time, both distinct and distinctive. The uniqueness of the Northern Irish legal system is clearly demonstrated in the corpus of environmental law which applies in this jurisdiction and in terms of both the institutions with responsibility for the environment and in the evolution and development of environmental policy.
