The convoy system of protecting maritime trade is not a new military tactic as the concept dates back centuries, but it came to great importance in World Wars I and II. Using the example of British trade protection in World War I and the failure of Japan to introduce similar measures in shipping in the Pacific in World War II, the author demonstrates how vital the security of merchant shipping is in wartime and the tactics, commanders and weapons involved in these fierce struggles.
