This innovative book analyzes the distribution and impact of different religious denominations in the North Midlands (Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire, Rutland and Derbyshire), in the 19th century. Central to the book is the original uses of quantitative methods to interpret the famous 1851 religious census. Snell uses techniques which have hitherto been entirely unknown to students of religious history. These allow many questions to be answered which are central to an understanding of the most urgently debated features of the religious history of this country. For example, the extent to which the various denominations coincided geographically, or were mutually exclusive, is tackled. There is discussion also of the occupational structure of various denominations, developing a social examination of the reasons for their growth. This book is intended for researchers in this field, and for students studying social and economic history, church history, and the sociology of religion.
