Summary

At the age of 20, Katherine Mansfield left England for the Bavarian spa town of Bad Worishofen. Alone and detached, she coolly observed the absurd posturings and affectations of the German bourgeoisie at leisure. There she began to write the stories that appeared in this, her first collection.

In a German Pension Summary

In a German Pension by Katherine Mansfield

The stories collected here are based on Katherine Mansfield's experiences in a Bavarian spa. They reflect her own spirited response to the constraints she felt were imposed upon her as a woman in the opening years of the twentieth century. From amusing depictions of class inequaltites on display to the tale of a young man taking advantage of a woman's extreme poverty, the stories are packed full of sharp, frank and satirical observations on human life.
