Jean Racine (1639-99) was a poet, playwright and master of classical French tragedy. He took his subjects from antiquity or mythology and became very popular with his plays dealing with blind, passionate love. 'Mithridate' (1673) tells the tragic story of the ageing king Mithridates of Pontus who, consumed by passion for Monime, the captive princess, has rivals in the persons of his sons Xiphares and Pharnace.
