About Jane Austen

Jane Austen was born in 1775 in Steventon, Hampshire, where her father was rector. After his death she moved with her mother and sister to Chawton, where she lived for the rest of her life. She began writing when she was 15 but her first book, Sense and Sensibility, was not published until 1811. Pride and Prejudice, probably her best known novel, was published in 1813 and her last two books, Persuasion and Northanger Abbey, were published after her death. Jane Austen died in 1817 and is buried in Winchester Cathedral.
