Padua in the 1450s Summary

Padua in the 1450s: Marco Zoppo and His Contemporaries by Hugo Chapman

The artist Marco Zoppo was born in 1433 in Cento, a small town outside Bologna. In the the mid-1450s, he went to Padua, which in this period was the leading artistic centre in Northern Italy. Published to accompany a British Museum exhibition, this catalogue features a recently acquired double-sided drawing which is the earliest-known by Zoppo and dates from the mid-1450s. The book and exhibition include drawings by other Northern Italian artists of the period, including Bellini, Mantegna and Tura. Zoppo's later development is illustrated in other work made after he left the city, including an album of drawings on vellum, also housed at the British Museum.
