Current drug problems are set against historical and epidemiological perspectives and the aetiology of drug dependence is also discussed. The book also includes useful definitions of terms, the effects and clinical characteristics of abuse of drugs and coverage of the effects of the drug abuse process on the patient's life. Various treatment types are presented, from clinical management to psychological and psycosocial interventions as well as the management of the numerous medical and psychiatric complications of drug dependence. About Hamid Ghodse

Hamid Ghodse is Professor of Psychiatry and International Drug Policy at St George's Hospital Medical School. He has been President of the International Narcotics Control Board since 2004, and a member of the board since 1992. Director of the International Centre for Drug Policy in Vienna. He has edited many books on addiction. He was appointed as inaugural Chair of the International Health Advisory Board in the UK in November 2009.
