Summary
In the second century AD, the Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius makes a deal with the barbarian Sarmatians. The fighting will stop if they supply Rome with 8000 horsemen. Thus begins the Roman life of Ariantes, warrior prince in a land not his own, surrounded by an honourless people.
