A Day Called Hope Summary

A Day Called Hope: A Personal Journey Beyond Depression by Gareth O'Callaghan

For several years, Gareth O'Callaghan, one of Ireland's most popular broadcasters, suffered from severe depression. No one guessed that the moment he was off air, he would retreat to his bed, sometimes with thoughts of suicide, and barely able to function as a husband and father of three small children. In this candid and courageous account, he describes the nightmare he and his family lived through for so long. He looks back to his childhood where he believes the low selfesteem he suffered took root and traces a pattern common to so many. As soon as he was diagnosed, Gareth began a determined fight back to health. Now fully recovered and no longer on anti-depressants, he has emerged with a deep understanding of how depression takes hold - and how to loosen its grasp. Here he shares his wisdom, insight, practical knowledge, and firm convictions in a mission to spread hope to all those affected by it.

a moving account of overcoming depression - Good Housekeeping

an intensely honest and personal account - Dublin Daily

READER LETTER 'I read your book last night and for the first time in twelve long, lonely years I got healing. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.'

READER LETTER 'I've read all the books I could find on depression. Been there, bought the T-shirt, as they say. Few of them told me little if anything. A Day Called Hope shocked and stunned me into a state of hopefulness and discovery. You could have removed your own name and replaced it mine! Everything you speak about mirrors the way I felt. What an amazing book! Thank you for the experience of reading it.'

READER LETTER 'I am a doctor, and was rather sceptical when I heard you had written a book about depression. I must apologise for my scepticism. Your words have taught me more about the private, painful experience of depression than twenty years as a practising GP. I am now insisting that my patients read your book and then we talk about their depressions afterwards. You have made a doctor's task that much more manageable.'

READER LETTER 'My brother committed suicide last year. I only wish your book had been available sooner, as I believe he may have identified and connected with your feelings and beliefs about this awful condition.'

READER LETTER 'I couldn't put your book down
